The Perfect(ish) Marriage book review

Could you have a perfect marriage? Do you want a perfect marriage?

So today, I’m writing about the book, The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose. The genre of the book is fiction. The theme of the book is suspense thriller, okay? So this book was right up my alley… kinda.

Sarah is married.

Check.

Sarah is a lawyer. A criminal defense lawyer to be exact.

Check.

Sarah’s husband is charged will killing his mistress.

Okay, that's where the similarities stop.

Let's get into my all-time favorite plot twist in the book: Sarah's husband Adam tries to be a “good guy” by confessing that he is cheating on her and hasn’t spoken to her. We are led to believe that Adam and the mistress stopped their affair and maybe she went away.

That’s fine. No hard feelings, right Sarah? If cheating is not a big deal to Sarah, who are we to judge. Until she is found brutally murdered and the husband’s DNA is all over the apartment and body.

Jeneva Rose is the queen of twists and I was unprepared and shocked by the twists and turns in this book. Spoiler alert: the husband didn’t do it.

This plot twist is so compelling because we get to see the characters a number of years after the crime happens. Jeneva is honest in now charging and bringing the husband to trial without days of his arrest. The husband is in jail for years while the wife works on his trial.

Yes, the husband asks his wife, OF WHOM HE IS CHEATING ON, to defend him and act as his lawyer. There are major red flags with this, and any prosecutor would immediately file for a mistrial because the attorney is too close to the client. Not even to mention the fact that spouses lie for each other!

And so you're coming back, you're getting an update, and you're like, okay, you know, is Sarah going to get married to someone?

 What's going to happen?

 Hey, what's happening with life?

Jeneva Rose has written this entire tale with us hanging on the edges of your seat. We are following the story: Sarah really loves her husband! Yay! Look at how she's defending Adam.

Oh this is so great… maybe a conflict of interest, but it’s okay with me if it’s okay with them.

Then at the end of the book, Sarah asks for a divorce because she cannot trust her husband. While he is convicted and remains in prison and Sarah shares her own secret because their marriage is not perfect.

Wait… I need to reread the entire book again.

Did I miss clues?

I often like to be able to anticipate what's happening in a book because I'm a scaredy cat and I don't want to be absolutely terrified. I couldn't anticipate what was going to happen in this book.

I was along for the ride and bamboozled in the ending. Thank you, Jeneva Rose. I look forward to reading your next book.

Until the next book,

Kyla
