Parents want to leave an inheritance for their children, but is it worth fighting over? Depends on how much money it is.
Today we are talking about the book Family Trust by Kathy Wang. The genre of the book is fiction, and the subject of the book is literature.
One of the quotes that I really liked in this book was:
"Success in America is less about what you earn than your particular luck the day you decided to take it for yourself.”
You have these two siblings, a girl and a boy. The daughter is a really successful software engineer in California, and the brother is successful as well, but everything is on the shoulders of the daughter.
If anyone is sick, the daughter is supposed to take care of them. If anyone is hungry, the daughter is supposed to feed them. The daughter has all of this pressure on her even though she has as demanding, if not a more demanding, job than her brother.
And the mom just says that’s to be expected in Asian culture. This is just the way things are.
The siblings are always trying to talk to the mom about the dad, but she doesn’t want to hear it.
“Mom, are you coming over for family dinner?”
“Why? Your father is remarried.”
“Mom, are you going to do this? Dad’s coming.”
“No. Why would I?”
You also get to see into the life of the new wife. She has two sisters who are excited because they think she married the rich guy.
Well, it turns out the mom had been listening to the dad when they were married, and she did really well for herself too. But no one is really looking at her because it’s expected that she would inherit from the father anyway.
That’s also indicative of why the quote matters. Success is not so much about how you earn it, but your luck on the day you decide to go after it.
The mom decided to go after it, and it turns out she had a little something in the family trust as well.
This presents a new way of looking at success.
There is quite a bit of luck that goes into it, quite a bit of opportunity, being in the right place at the right time.
I thought this was really important because it was also really indicative of the life and role of the mother. Eventually, she had to stand up and say:
"I know this is how it’s done, but I’m not doing it.”

And for her to be successful in doing that, it all depended on the luck on the day she decided she was going to go after it.
Would I reread the book? Probably not, but not for any bad reason. It was a great book. It reminded me of a lot of other things I’ve read and movies I’ve seen before, so I wouldn’t really need to reread it.
But it was really cute.
If you’ve read anything by Kathy Wang, let me know.
Until the next book review,
Kyla
