If I had a best friend and they were married to someone that I absolutely hated… okay, maybe I kind of liked them but I had a feeling… and then they hurt my friend’s feelings?

It’s done.

They can forgive them, but I’m never going to forgive them. Maybe in another life, but not in this life. In this life, I still hate them.

Today we’re talking about love in another life, friendship in another life, sunshine in another life. We’re talking about Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This is a fiction book with romance, a little rom-com energy, and that literary feel she always brings.

We’re following Hannah.

Hannah is known for moving all over the place, but she finally comes back to California and stays with her best friend, Gabby. She’s fresh off a breakup, talking about how she should have known something was off. Turns out the guy was married.

And Gabby’s like, true love exists, don’t worry about it, my husband and I are happy, you’ll find it. It’s fine. But also… what about that guy you used to date?

So you’re watching Hannah and thinking, okay, I see where this is going. She’s going to reconnect with him. I hope they hook up. No.

This book takes you down a full sliding doors moment.

(If you’ve never seen Sliding Doors with Gwyneth Paltrow… go watch it. So good.)

Hannah has this one pivotal decision: does she leave with Gabby that night, or does she stay and go home with her ex?

And that one choice changes everything.

If she goes home with Gabby, she never sees him again. That life goes in a completely different direction.

If she goes home with the guy, things are cute… but still not what you expect.

You’re following both paths at the same time.

My favorite thing is… love wins.

In one version, she ends up with this cutest guy who’s a nurse. And it all starts because she always wears her hair in this big, messy bun, like a full beehive situation, and she ends up in the hospital needing a scrunchie. He has one on his wrist.

It’s so simple. So cute. And you’re just like… swoon.

But that’s not even who she originally came back for.

She moved back to California for someone else.

That’s what makes this so good. If you’re into romantic stories, this is it. But also, it’s Taylor Jenkins Reid. We’re talking The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. We’re talking One True Loves.

She brings the drama.

“I know there may be universes out there where I made different choices and they led me somewhere else, led me to someone else. And my heart breaks for every single version of me that didn't end up with you.”

This book is dramatic, but it’s also a page turner. I think I read it in like two and a half days because you’re constantly like, wait no, there’s Henry. And then there’s who? And then Gabby…

And here’s the part I didn’t expect: it’s not just Hannah’s life that changes.

Gabby’s life changes too.

Depending on what Hannah chooses, her friends end up with different people, different lives, different outcomes. That’s the lane we don’t really go down in those alternate reality stories.

The friendships change. The relationships change. Everything shifts.

You basically get two love stories in one book.

So good. So good.

And if none of that sold you, again, go watch Sliding Doors and come back. If you hate it, you’ll probably still like this. If you love it, you’ll definitely like this. It’s that same alternate reality concept, but not in a corny, sci-fi way.

It’s funny. It’s cute. It just works.

Until the next book review,

Kyla
