  • Apple Never Fall book review | Best Liane Moriaty book

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree because we imitate everything we see when we're kids. Everything.  Let’s discuss what happens in this family and why they probably need a little bit of space. We are discussing the book Apples Never Fall. The author of the book is Liane Moriarty. The genre of the book is fiction and the theme of the book is suspense thriller. I have a lot of quotes that I really enjoyed from this book. I had a lot because the book was a LOT; like really intense.  I've read a lot of Liane Moriarty's books before, and she has this way of storytelling that’s incredible. Let's get into one of the really big quotes that I really felt like was really important in the book. That quote is: She made the right choice for the girl she was then.  That quote is from the mom in the book, Joy. That quote relates to so many different things in the novel. You first start reading the book, and you find there's this family and there's someone who comes over to hang out with the family. Okay. Easy enough. Well, there are four kids, husband, wife, and they own a business. Okay. What's not to love? Easy peasy. Then the whole story, there's a huge plot twist where the mom was keeping a secret from the dad. And the secret actually affects all of the kids because it has something to do with their family business. There's another quote where Joy says,  Big quote: "If given the choice between my husband and my kids, I'm gonna choose my kids every time I'm a mother."  I was like, yeah, duh! But this quote and the choices that Joy makes are not very simple or obvious. That speaks to the decision she made that affects the family, to her choosing to get married, to her choosing to have kids, to them choosing to start a business, to them having the stranger stay in their house; it speaks to all of it.  So, between all of those different factors, right now I'm in a place where it's like, you're not a stupid person, you use wisdom, the decision you make now, we're going to just have to say that that was the wisest choice at the time and keep it moving. I love that. I was learning a lot from Joy, the character who was in the book. It was a really good book. There were many different treats. What I find so surprising about books like this is how the parents' relationship really does affect the kids. At one point, almost every one of the kids was breaking up with someone or not in a relationship, and that kind of tumbled into the rest of the story. Then, when people started mending relationships, others started mending again. So it was pretty cool. I don't know if the author meant to tie in those little things, but they were real clues I noticed. And so that quote was really important to me because Joy is really standing in the decisions that she's made. So when I was in college, I tended to be really fickle, and I was just like, if I wanna do it, I'll do it. If I don't, I don't. If I decided, who cares? And then I went through a period where I was like, "I'm an adult."  Make a decision, stick to it, that's it. Then I get to law school and it's like, start thinking five, seven, ten years in the future so she can be prepared. And then I just I was just stuck and any kind of change just like threw me for a huge loop. And so now I'm kind of like, change is not bad, but also you don't have to be fickle in order to have a good life, but you can plan in the future. But if things change, then that's okay too.  Get your copy of Apples Never Fall . As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. So now I'm kind of in this amorphous space. And so that quote meant a lot to me because, Kyla, do you trust yourself? Yes.  Are you a wise person? Yes.  Are you making decisions that have other people in mind? Yes.  Well then, make your decision, stand on it, and know that that was the right decision for the girl you were at the time you made it. That's why that quote was important to me. Would I reread this book? Yes, I reread a lot of Liane Moriarty's books because of the characters. I jump right into the pages, and I'm like, alright, let's go spend some time with the Delaney family again today. I will definitely reread this book. I hope you enjoyed today's discussion of Apples Never Fall. Really good book. Leave a comment.  Let me know if you've read anything by the author. Let me know if you have any books you want to recommend, or what's on your bookshelf right now.  Until next time, Kyla

  • When No One is Watching book review

What you do when no one is watching is really important. Keep reading to find out what book I'm talking about and why you have to pay attention to who's watching.  Hey y'all, it's Kyla Denanyoh.  I read a book called When No One Is Watching. The book was written by Alyssa Cole. It's a fiction novel with a suspense thriller theme.  So there will be spoilers. It's a book review, but one of the most significant twists, shifts, turns —whatever you want to call it— was when Theo came out wearing the Black Lives Matter shirt, and Sydney was like, "Please take that off." You've got to take that off. Please, please, please. So that was important because Theo is white, Sydney is black, and he was wearing the shirt to show his support.  One of the kids in the neighborhood was being harassed by the police, so he was wearing the shirt. He just thought he was being an ally, and we appreciate allies of black people. We do. However, the Black Lives Matter shirt was just not the right time. It was drawing attention to Theo in a negative way.  My black sweatshirt is a vibe. It stands for black clothing. But really, it's talking about black people. Black people are our whole vibe. And it's awesome that it can be on a tie-dye shirt. Almost even ironic. But it's those kinds of things. You're already here. You're showing that you're involved. You're attending community meetings. The Black Lives Matter shirt, we don't need it. We don't need it. Please take that off.  And she was like, I need you to change your clothes right now. So I love that part. I thought that was great. So why was that important to me? It was important to me because I have had a lot of people who are not black. So that includes people of color. That includes white people who have supported me and been allies of mine as a black woman. I appreciate it. I love it. It's great. And some people try but don't know what to do.  So, I remember summer 2020, and I was pregnant, preparing to have my daughter, when a lot of stuff was happening and all the Black Lives Matter protests and things like that. And I saw a message where someone said, "Some people support financially, some people support with their time, some people support by protesting." Basically, there are different ways to show your support. And that was how I felt while reading the book. I was like, Wow, I appreciated that Theo was trying to be an ally, and Sydney was honest with him and told him we don't need that right now. Just continue being an ally and showing up. You don't need to wear the merchandise. Get your copy of When No One Is Watching . As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. So I really enjoyed that piece, mainly because I have many allies who are not black. And I am making that distinction because people of color and Black people are different. It's different. Black with a capital B. It's different. This book was deep. I mean, my husband and I are trying to buy a house, so the book had to deal with gentrifying neighborhoods and institutionalizing black people, getting them addicted to drugs so that you can buy their properties. It was hitting just so close to home while I'm struggling to find a house.  I would not re-read the book because I'm not going to forget it. It's just not… It was a good thriller, but most thrillers I don't need to re-read because I was scared while reading them. I'm like, okay. No, I wouldn't re-read it, but it was a great book. It was an excellent book.  Until the next book review, Kyla

  • The Courage to be Disliked book review

So even if you are strong, tough, and courageous, you want to be liked by a few people, even if just by yourself. Keep watching to find out how it is being courageous.  Today, I'm discussing the book, The Courage to be Disliked . I saw this book and was like, "That sounds interesting to me." Let's pick it up. There are two authors, Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga. I was not expecting it to be non-fiction because it was an exceptional title for a fiction book. The theme of the book is self-improvement and self-development. So, the book is based on a philosopher's writings. The authors took the philosopher's writings and turned them into a question-and-answer story. So, the philosopher would say, you need to do this, you need to care less about that. And then the student would ask, but how can I care less about that? That's really impractical for you to say that. And then the philosopher would explain some more. So, the story's layout gave you that back-and-forth. The questions that the student was asking were questions that you would have asked.  Like, I get it, philosopher. How can I apply that to my life? And that aspect of the book I really, really enjoyed. And an important quote in the book was this. So life's not a competition. That's right. It's enough just to keep moving forward without competing with anyone. And of course, there's no need to compare yourself to other people. So why is that quote important to me? That quote really matters because it's impossible not to compare yourself. And I say that because the big thing now that you hear all the time is, I only compare myself to myself. I'm only competing with the person I was yesterday. Well, that's still comparing. It is enough just to keep moving forward. That's it. And that really resonated with me because I like to plan.  I like to think ahead.  I like to do better. I like to progress.  Even if I'm just getting 1% better every day, I want to do it.  And I would never call myself a competitive person (Scrabble/board games aren’t included, right?). So while I would not call myself a competitive person, I do like to progress. I;ve been working from home lately. My husband's career is completely a remote job. We're raising a kindergartener. We're in a new marriage. And it's enough. It's enough just to be moving forward. And that feels so good. And it's such a weight off my shoulders. It's such a weight off my shoulders to know that I can just move forward. What you're doing is valuable. What you're doing is important. Just move forward. So I really like that piece. if you missed the video I was laid off in December 2021, it mae me realize that I needed to focus on self-development. Before 2021, I didn’t read a lot of self-improvement or non-fiction books, but now they are my favorite topics.  I'm really enjoying the introspection that comes from reading nonfiction books or self-development books. And this book was really relevant to me. And I'm happy that I'm starting to get into these types of books because they're important. Get your copy of The Courage to Be Disliked . As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. The Courage To Be Disliked was unlike anything I;ve read before. The conversation the student had with the philosopher, back and forth, made a lot of sense. And it really helped me to personalize the philosopher's tales.  Would I reread this book? Yes, I would reread this book. I listened to it on audiobook and I would definitely purchase the book and read it. You know, get the hardback version and scribble things in the margins. I know that I would get a different take on the book so yes, I would reread it so thank you for following along with me today we were talking about the courage to be disliked excellent philosophy self-development book if you're looking for a book that will make you think a little bit outside the box, make you question some of the things that you do and the motives for a lot of the things that you do, consider picking up this book.  See you in the next blog,  Kyla
