The Hunting Wives book review

I remember judging her so hard the first time I read this book. I was just like, "Why do you care what they're talking about on Facebook?"

If you are looking for a book about mean girls who are adults who also play with guns, The Hunting Wives might be for you.

I'm reviewing The Hunting Wives by May Cobb. The genre is fiction, and the theme is suspense thriller.

I'll be honest. I picked this book up again because Netflix just picked up the show for a second season.

I do not watch new TV shows unless there are at least three seasons. Now, if you cancel it, of course, then I can go pick it up. But I don't want to get invested in the characters, and then you don't keep it going. Then I'm like, "Oh, that was a waste of my time." No.

I read The Hunting Wives when it first came out, around 2021. That was before I was doing book reviews.

I remember season one of The Hunting Wives becoming a huge deal. I know that Quinn from Scandal is in it, and I think I would put Quinn as Erin, who is Sophie's friend. She's not really in the entire group but is kind of on the outside.

So I would not be surprised if they bring Erin Moore into the fold.

Because the scriptwriters are going to take the plot of the book and expand upon it for TV. They do that.

I don't recognize the person playing Sophie. The woman playing Margot? Love her from Billions, hated her from 27 Dresses. I think she would make an exceptional Margot.

But I'm curious because people were obsessed with the show. It was an instant fan favorite, but how much did they show?

When you make a series and you don't know if it's going to be picked up for another season, I'm assuming they didn't take us through the entire book. Right? Margot's still alive at the end of season one.

I remember reading this book and thinking the flirtation between Sophie and Margot was cute. I remember thinking that Callie had done it the whole time I was reading it. These are not spoilers.

I don't remember thinking, "Oh, I wonder if it's going to be a show. I wonder who the casting is going to be." I didn't go that far.

But I remember reading it and being like, "Wow. This is so compelling."

Because I don't know anything about hunting. I don't know anything about skeet shooting. I don't know anything about the kickback of a shotgun.

I also went to law school in Louisiana, so I like Texas. I understand that the South is very different.

I think Sophie comes from Chicago. Midwest to Southern, completely different place. And your Houston and Dallas are not the same as your smaller rural towns in Texas.

So I can imagine you show up in this new area, and you're just like...

I did not like Sophie the second time I read it.

I remember the first time I read it, I thought she was incredibly naive.

Why would you trust these women? Why are you making out with the high school guy? Why do you care what they're talking about on Facebook?

Don't judge her for that. People care. People do care.

The second time I read it, I was like, "No. She really thought she and Margot had something." And honestly, to say that is diminishing it because I think Margot probably really was feeling her.

But as much as you could care for someone, she made Sophie feel like she cared for her. So I believe that part.

I'm sad that Margot is not still here. I want to know why. I want to know why Brad was such a big deal. I want to know why you were so bored in your marriage.

And the book is very good.

So I had a lot more empathy for Sophie this time.

You know what else? I'm a parent now.

In 2021, I would've had a one-year-old. So yeah, I definitely feel differently now when Sophie goes against her husband's wishes a couple of times.

I was just like, "I cannot imagine doing anything to not see my child."

And I remember when Sophie gets down bad, and she doesn't get to see Jack for a couple of days. I'm just like, "Oh my God."

Sophie does have a beautiful relationship with Graham. Towards the end, we find out that they are estranged. They're not living together, but they're not formally divorced.

So that actually leaves the opening for another book.

I remember also thinking, "Just pack up and leave. Why are you still in Texas? These women are terrible."

And when I read it this time, you wouldn't change your whole life. Your husband has a whole job here. Your kid is comfortable here. You wouldn't pick up and change everything.

The flippancy of being a single person, very different.

"The flippancy of being a single person, very different."

In 2026, reading it seven years into being married and six years into being a parent, I'm like, "Well, you wouldn't just pick up and leave."

Your kids have memories here.

It's interesting how differently I feel about Sophie now compared to when I first read the book.

If you have read this before and then watched the show, read it again. And if you haven't watched the show, read the book. Listen. This book is 352 pages. You can't put everything in the show. You just can't.

With a book, you are following the character. You literally step into their shoes, and you're like, "What are you seeing? What are you doing?" You can't quite do that the same way in a TV show. And the couple of movies that have done it are a little weird.

So a lot of the things that Sophie would have just been thinking, she has to be talking out with other people. That's how you have to make a lot of changes for scriptwriting.

Would I Reread The Hunting Wives?

Absolutely.

Because I will feel differently again.

And the cover still eats.

Until the next book review,

Kyla
