There's a common saying: don't meet your idols. Because if you do and they turn out to be jerks, you'll never really get over it.
That's kind of how I feel about a fictional idol.
Today we're talking about Revenge Wears Prada, a book that's becoming even more relevant because The Devil Wears Prada 2 is on the way. And let me tell you...this sequel is heartbreaking. So, so, so heartbreaking.
Revenge Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger is a fiction novel with a literary comedy theme. It was published in 2013 and is the second book in the Andy Sachs series.

I've already reviewed The Devil Wears Prada, and one thing I always tell people is this:
The book is nothing like the movie.
And that's okay.
Screenwriters are writing for a completely different audience, so changes are expected. But there are some really big, foundational differences between who Andy is in the book and who Andy becomes in the movie.
In anticipation for the second movie is out, there was so much excitement. Everyone wants to go back to Runway. People have been speculating for years about what happens next.
Lauren Weisberger used to work at Vogue, and it's widely believed that Miranda Priestly was inspired by Anna Wintour. That connection has followed the books ever since.
A lot of people don't realize there was already a sequel.
If you don't like spoilers...this is your warning.
Because while I don't think the movie will follow the book exactly, the book will absolutely break your heart.
I'm talking drop-kick you, punch you in the throat, emotionally wreck you.
The first Devil Wears Prada book already does that, and Revenge Wears Prada keeps going.
Remember, though, the movie writers are still building from the characters they created in the first film. Their versions of Andy, Emily, Miranda, and even Nigel aren't exactly the same as the book versions.
The story begins with Andy getting married.
If you're thinking she's marrying Alex from the movie...nope.
Emily actually introduces Andy to a media mogul, and that's who she's engaged to.
One of my favorite surprises is that Emily and Andy are best friends.
Think back to the end of the first story. Andy apologizes to Emily and offers her all those designer clothes she can't use anymore. That friendship grows, and I loved seeing where it ended up.
Then, of course...
Miranda shows up.
Miranda wants to buy Andy's bridal magazine because Runway doesn't have one in its portfolio.
That's when everything starts to unravel.
One thing I love about these books is that I think The Devil Wears Prada is really about Runway, and we just happen to see Andy's life because she works there.
But these later books?
They're Andy's story.
Runway becomes the accessory.
I'm really curious to see how the new movie handles that dynamic because Andy has changed so much.
She isn't the young assistant desperately trying to survive anymore.
She's successful.
She's valuable.
She has choices.
"Now Andy holds the cards."
That's what I enjoyed most about this book.
In the first story, you're cheering because Andy is trying so hard while Miranda seems impossible to please.
In this one, you're cheering because Andy finally realizes her own value.
Now the questions become:
What would Andy choose?
What would Miranda choose?
Can Miranda actually change?
Those questions made the story so much more interesting.
I absolutely loved watching Andy grow up. There are so many twists and turns that kept me invested, and I found myself rooting for her in a completely different way than I did in the first book.
Would I reread Revenge Wears Prada?
Absolutely.
Phenomenal. Phenomenal. Phenomenal.
Reading this also reminded me that I need to go back and reread When Life Gives You Lululemons. I remember reading it because Lululemon was such a huge brand at the time, but I didn't even realize I was still following Andy's story.
Now I want to go back and experience it again with that perspective.
